About.
Soph's House.
Started by me, Sophie - a designer, family woman and maker based on the East London/Essex border, after a decade designing woven and printed textiles for fashion.
I believe that the everyday objects in a home matter, and I wanted to make things that were genuinely worth keeping.
The great William Morris once said: "Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful."
But why not both?
The tea towel you love to look at that's also a genuine pleasure to use. A napkin that makes a normal Tuesday night dinner feel like a special occasion. A piece in a joyful print that reminds you of that particular time in that special place.
To me, these aren't luxuries - they're the things that make a home feel like yours.
Each collection is designed and developed by me, from original hand-painted watercolour prints through to finished product. Printed on organic and responsibly sourced fabrics, made to last, and packaged with care. Once a batch is ready and in my hands, I wash, dry, fold, and pack every piece myself, then walk it to the post office.
New collections launch seasonally in limited runs.
-
I trained in woven textiles at Chelsea College of Art, and spent over a decade designing prints and woven textiles for fashion brands and retailers - visiting mills and print studios around the world, working on everything from high street ranges to celebrity collaborations.
My own design style draws on my dual heritage - the vibrant colour of Barbados meeting the quieter tones of the British countryside - along with whatever's caught my eye that week: a fruit bowl, a wildflower, a Christmas table.
I became a mum in 2018, and went freelance in 2020 under my own studio, Mowat&daughter.
Soph's House grew from wanting to bring that same eye for quality and craft - the kind I'd spent years designing for other brands - into things for my own home, and yours.
Somewhere among all the beautifully made things in the luxury department stores I worked at - admirable, covetable, priced just highly enough that they felt special, not standard ‘everyday’ - it struck me: if you've earned it, there's no reason you shouldn't have it. I just wanted to make things like that for the everyday kitchen table, not the store shelf.
Every piece still starts the same way it always has for me, by hand, usually in watercolour or ink - before I bring it to life digitally, then onto fabric.
Making responsibly.
Every Soph's House. piece starts as 100% organic cotton - and as the collection grows, I'll be bringing in recycled PET, linen-cotton blends, and linen too.
My production partners are responsible, certified producers - my waffle tea towels are made in the same facility that produces babywear, so the standards are exceptional and the commitment to ethical manufacturing is real.
All packaging is recycled and recyclable - yes, even the stickers. No nasties, no compromises.
The current collection, Chapter 1: Summertime, is available now.
